Women's team dominates Spain 21-0 in opening game at World University Games

Davidson, Canada roll over newcomer Spain in opener

TRENTINO, Italy (CIS) – Gabrielle Davidson of McGill University scored four times and added two assists as the Canadian women's hockey team spanked Spain 21-0 to open the defense of its FISU title at the 26th Winter Universiade, Tuesday night.

The result was somewhat predictable as Canada entered the biennial tournament as reigning two-time champion, having triumphed in 2009 in China when the sport made its Universiade debut and again in 2011 in Turkey, while Spain was playing its first-ever FISU contest.

The Canadians improved to a perfect 15-0 all-time at the tourney and have now outscored their opponents by a 118-10 margin overall.

The final score was the second most lopsided in the short history of Universiade women's hockey. Finland crushed host Turkey 32-0 in preliminary round action two years ago.

"It was good to get our legs and get a game under our belt," said Team Canada head coach Howie Draper, who has led the Alberta Pandas to a record seven national titles since the sport was added to the CIS program 16 years ago. "As a coaching staff, we wanted to see the lines and how they worked together. Coaches from the east hadn't necessarily had a lot of opportunity to see the players from the west and vice versa, so it was a good opportunity to evaluate all aspects. There are things we need to work on and improve on – we'll need them as we move into the later rounds."

The game featured no penalties and Canada overwhelmed Spain by a lopsided 80-2 margin in shots, including 28-0 in the first period and a 31-0 in the second frame.

The Canucks led 6-0 after the opening stanza and 13-0 after two.

Davidson, a sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., who currently leads the CIS goal scoring race with 15 markers in only 10 league games, was joined on the scoresheet by Wilfrid Laurier forward Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., who also had a hat-trick and added one helper.

Brooker was one of seven players to tally four points in the win, along with Josianne Legault (2-2-4) and team captain Kim Deschênes (0-4-4), both of the reigning CIS champion Montreal Carabins, Katia Clément-Heydra of McGill (2-2-4), Cara Wooster of Saskatchewan (2-2-4), Alex Normore of StFX (1-3-4) and Kimberley Wong of Guelph (1-3-4).

Rounding out the scoring for the CIS all-stars were Guelph's Jessica Pinkerton, with two, as well as Gryphon teammate Amanda Perkins, Calgary's Jenna Smith, UBC's Tatiana Rafter and Queen's Morgan McHaffie.

Netminder Élodie Rousseau-Sirois, another Carabin standout who hails from Pohenegamook, Que., needed to make only two saves to register the shutout. Shell-shocked Spanish starter Carlota Alvarado Martin-Calero was credited with 58 saves on 75 shots. She was beaten 17 times before being relieved by Oihane Tedone Linde, who played just over five minutes and conceded four goals on five shots.

Canada (1-0) plays Russia (0-1) on Thursday in its second of five round-robin contests.

The Russians dropped their opener 4-2 against the USA on Tuesday. Japan beat Great Britain 10-1 in the other day one duel.

The Winter Universiade is a biennial international multi-sport event open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
