X-Women prevail over Huskies in shootout
November 24, 2012
The CIS ranked No. 7 X-Women hockey team skated to a 2-1 shootout victory over the visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies Friday evening at the Keating Centre. Third year forward Alex Normore tied the game with 44 seconds left in the third period to send it to overtime, and freshman forward Schyler Campbell was the shootout hero.
The Huskies held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the final two periods, their lone goal coming off the stick of Kaitlyn Abbass at the 18:12 minute mark of the first period. Taylor Williamson and Sarah Maynard picked up assists as Abbass deked and beat StFX netminder Kristy Garrow.
Both teams were held off the score sheet for the second period, despite the X-Women outshooting the Huskies by a lopsided 23-5 margin. Saint Mary’s goaltender Sienna Cooke, named the second star of the game, made several key saves to maintain the Huskies lead.
Saint Mary’s appeared to be en route to handing the X-Women their second loss of the season, but after pulling Garrow with just over a minute left in the third period, Normore connected on a one-timer off an Erin Brophy pass to beat Cooke and finally find the back of the net, tying the game with 44 seconds left to play. Jenna Pitts also assisted on the tying goal.
The ten minute overtime period didn’t decide anything, although the X-Women had several good scoring chances.
In the ensuing shootout, each team sent their first five shooters, only to be stooped by both Garrow and Cooke. In the sudden death shootout, Campbell was the 10th StFX shooter and was able to finally solve Cooke. Garrow stopped the next Saint Mary’s shooter to secure the X victory, picking up her conference leading sixth win of the season.
The X-Women outshot the Huskies by a 38-14 margin.
With a 10-1-0 record, the X-Women sit in first place in the AUS conference with 20 points, three ahead of second place St. Thomas (8-2-1).
Friday night’s game marked their final regular season game of the first half. Their previously scheduled November 25th game against Dalhousie has been postponed and will be rescheduled in the second term.
The X-Women will host a pair of exhibition games on December 28th and 29th against OUA opponent Windsor at the StFX Keating Centre. They resume AUS regular season action on January 5th and 6th with games against Moncton and St. Thomas, also at the Keating Centre.
