X-Women hockey host ALS awareness game
January 18, 2013
Last Sunday, the StFX X-Women hockey team prevailed against their longtime rival St. Mary’s Huskies in a game that was anything but ordinary. The X-Women put aside their traditional blue & white for a day and donned purple jerseys and socks for an ALS awareness game. StFX Athletics teamed up with the ALS Society of Nova Scotia to present what will be an annual ALS awareness game with the women’s hockey team, in an effort to raise awareness and funds to support those living with this terminal illness.
ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease, effects thousands of Canadians and leaves them without mobility or basic functions and is eventually terminal. The idea for an awareness game came about from an X-Women hockey athlete who has family members affected by the disease. CEO and President of the ALS Society of Nova Scotia, Kim Carter, gave a presentation during the first intermission of the game, which saw the X-Women go on to defeat the visiting Huskies squad by a 6-2 score. The X-Women collected donations in support of ALS from fans in attendance.
The X-Women are planning to hang on to the purple jerseys in order to host an ALS awareness game next season. For more information about the ALS Society of Nova Scotia, and to contribute to this worthy cause, visit www.alsns.ca.
