X-Women earn weekend split
The CIS ranked No. 2 X-Women hockey team played two games on home ice this weekend and they skated to a 5-2 win over St. Thomas but fell 1-0 to the CIS ranked No. 7 Aigles Bleues de Moncton.
Their Saturday evening game against the Aigles Bleues was the second loss in as many weeks to the undefeated team.
Genevieve David’s power play goal at 12:46 in the third period was all that was needed for the win, despite being outshot 37-14 by the X-Women. Veteran Moncton goaltender Kathy Desjardins earned Subway Player of the Game honors for her strong performance.
On Sunday afternoon at the Keating Centre the X-Women regrouped to earn a 5-2 win over the St. Thomas Tommies. Rebecca Traversa scored two goals and was the Subway Player of the game, while Kristy Garrow earned the win in nets for the X-Women as they outshot the visiting Tommies by a convincing 49-16 margin.
St. Thomas got on the board first with a power play goal by Danielle Miller 1:25 into the first period. Jessica McCullough evened the game at 11:05 after she shoveled a puck towards the net that fooled Tommies netminder Julia Sharun. Janelle Parent was credited with an assist on the play.
Katie Brewster gave the Tommies back the one-goal edge with a late power play goal as the score stood at 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
The lead was erased in the second period as the X-Women scored three unanswered goals. Jenna Pitts scored the tying goal for X on a shot from the point at the 8:47 minute mark, while Daniela Falconio was credited with the go-ahead goal at 13:51 after she was the last to touch a loose puck that went in off a Tommies player. Parent and Alex Normore assisted on the Pitts goal while Falconio’s was unassisted.
Forward Rebecca Traversa rounded out the StFX scoring with two goals. Her first came late in the second period at the 17:25 mark off a pass from Normore. She fired a hard shot, beating Sharun glove-side. Traversa’s second goal was the only one scored in the third period. She was in tight to the Tommies net and fired in a loose puck just at the end of a StFX power play. Jenna Downey and Nicole Hansom assisted on the play.
With the weekend split in games, the X-Women’s record now stands at 6-2-0 as they sit in second place in the AUS. Next on the schedule is a road trip to Halifax on Sunday, November 20th when they will play the last place Saint Mary’s Huskies (1-4-1) at 2:00 pm.
