The StFX X-Women are the 2011 AUS women’s hockey champions. The X-Women extended their 24-0-0 regular season undefeated streak with three more wins at the AUS championship including a convincing 9-2 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in the final game to capture the AUS championship banner in front of their hometown crowd Sunday afternoon at the StFX Keating Centre.

The X-Women had round robin wins over Dalhousie (9-2) and Mount Allison (6-1) on route to their eighth AUS banner in team history and first since 2008. AUS tournament MVP Erin Brophy had a goal and two assists for the X-Women in the championship game, while AUS first team all-stars Janelle Parent and Alex Normore and AUS second team all-star Marilynn Hay each scored two goals a piece. Parent also added four assists in the game. 

Brophy opened up the scoring for the X-Women 5:32 into the first period, but minutes later Moncton’s Valérie Boisclair tied the game with a power play goal. Fifth year veteran defense Marilynn Hay notched her first goal of the game at the 11:17 minute mark to regain the lead for StFX which they held for the duration of the game. AUS Rookie of the Year Alex Normore fired one across the goal line before the first period was up (16:13) to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of the X-Women after 20 minutes of play.

The X-Women owned the second period, scoring four unanswered goals to widen the gap and take a 7-1 lead in the game heading into the second intermission. Molly MacDonald scored a quick goal 1:21 into the second frame, while Hay scored her second goal of the game (6:01) as she snuck one past Aigles Bleues netminder Kathy Desjardins while on the power play. Janelle Parent scored her first goal of the afternoon late in the second period as she stole the puck and broke up ice, unassisted, scoring on a breakaway.  Carolyn Campbell rounded out the scoring for StFX with 39 seconds left in the second period.

Janie LeBlanc scored Moncton’s second goal of the game two minutes into the third period, but the deficit was too much to overcome for the Aigles Bleues. StFX’s Normore and Parent added a goal a piece before the final buzzer sounded to seal the 9-2 win for the X-Women and clinch the AUS title and a berth to the CIS championship, slated for the upcoming weekend at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Total shots on goal in the AUS final were 34-19 in the X-Women’s favor. AUS all-rookie team member Kristy Garrow was awarded the win for the champion X-Women squad while veteran goaltender Kathy Desjardins was tagged with the loss for the Aigles Bleues. The game marked the final one for fifth year Moncton forward Mariève Provost who closed out her career as the AUS all-time leading scorer. Valérie Boisclair was named Player of the Game for Moncton, while Marilynn Hay took home Player of the Game honors for StFX.

Second year forward Erin Brophy from the X-Women was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player while her teammate Suzanne Fenerty, fourth year X-Women captain on defense, earned a spot on the tournament all-star team. Joining Fenerty on the all-star team were goaltender Julia Sharun and Kayla Blackmore from St. Thomas, defenseman Laura Shearer from Dalhousie and Moncton forward Provost and Kristine Labrie.

The X-Women will now be travelling to Waterloo, ON for the CIS national championship taking place March 10-13 at Wilfrid Laurier University. The trip will mark StFX’s tenth appearance at the national championship. Their best finish came in 2006 when they placed fourth overall.
