Women’s hockey: Canada dominates USA 9-0

ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) – Erin Lally, Ann-Sophie Bettez and Jessica Zerafa each scored twice and Beth Clause earned an 11-save shutout as Canada’s women’s hockey team improved to 4-0 at the 25th Winter Universiade with a convincing 9-0 win over the United States, Monday morning.

With one game remaining in the preliminary round, Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET) against host Turkey, Canada has all but secured first place in the round-robin standings. Turkey is 0-3 going into a Monday night duel against second-place Finland (2-0-1), with zero goals for and 45 goals against.
The top four teams at the end of round-robin action advance to Friday’s semifinals.
The red-and-white defence was once again dominant against the USA allowing only 11 shots on net en route to its third shutout in four contests. Canada has now outscored its opponents 28-1 overall while outshooting its rivals 157 to 29.
“We looked much quicker than them, and I think our skill level was higher as well,” said Team Canada head coach Les Lawton, from Concordia University. “They obviously struggled a little bit, they had a tough game last night against Finland that took a lot out of them. I think we just wore them down. We took a 3-0 lead in the first and didn’t look back after that.”
“Our players are well aware of the history and rivalry between Canada and the USA in women’s hockey, and I’m a lot of them went into the game with that in the back of their minds.”
Clause, a Brock University netminder from Hamilton who shares goaltending duties with Wilfrid Laurier’s Liz Knox in Erzurum, recorded her second shutout win in as many outings at the Games after blanking Slovakia 3-0 on Friday.
Heather Rossi started in net for the Americans and took the loss after stopping 29 of 36 pucks fired her way. Katie Vaughan took over in the third period and made five saves on seven shots.
Canada led 3-0 after 20 minutes and 7-0 after two periods.
Lally, a Concordia forward from Calgary, and Bettez, a McGill attacker from Sept-Îles, Que., both finished with two goals and one assist, while Manitoba’s Addie Miles of Winnipeg tallied four helpers.
In addition to Zerafa, a Guelph forward from Mississauga, Ont., Saskatchewan’s Breanne George of Saskatoon, McGill’s Carly Hill of Dorval, Que., and Montreal’s Kim Deschênes of Saint-Quentin, N.B., also found the back of the net for the winners.
After scoring the game-winner only 79 seconds into the contest in Sunday’s 14-0 victory over Great Britain, Deschênes opened the scoring after 1:55 of play against the USA.
Canada put the game out of reach when Bettez, Zerafa and Lally all beat Rossi in the first three minutes of the middle frame to make it 6-0.
The United States (1-3) face a must-win game on Wednesday when they square off with Great Britain (1-3) in their round-robin finale. The winners will earn the fourth and final semifinal spot and will likely face Canada on Friday.
