X-Women fall to REDS in AUS semfinal
Top seeded REDS too much to handle for X-Women as they fell 72-52 in AUS semifinal game
Halifax, NS – The top seeded UNB REDS were too much to handle for the STFX X-Women as they fell 72-52 in the Atlantic University Sport semifinal game Saturday afternoon at Scotiabank Centre.
The REDS opened the game on an 8-0 run and played strong defense at the other end to keep the X-Women off the scoreboard in the opening three minutes until Mali Straker scored a three-pointer for STFX.
The X-Women then went on a seven-point run of their own to pull to within a point midway through the quarter.
UNB closed out the quarter with a 15-10 lead.
They opened up a nine-point lead, 22-13, three minutes into the second quarter as the X-Women fought to stay within striking distance.
STFX pulled to within six points but consecutive threes from UNB's Ann Bastien and Katie McAffee late in the quarter gave them a 36-24 lead.
The REDS pulled ahead to take a 40-26 lead into the locker room at halftime as they outscored the X-Women 25-16 in the second frame.
Bastien scored 9 points for UNB in the opening half, while Maheva Ngassam netted eight. Ayla White led the X-Women with 10 points.
Both teams struggled to score in the third but UNB continued to build up their lead and were up by 20 with a minute left in the quarter.
They closed out with a 53-37 advantage, outscoring the X-Women 15-11.
The X-Women played a strong fourth quarter but the REDS lead to was too much to overcome and they held on for the 72-52 win.
Bastien was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game as she led the REDS with 17 points.
White finished as the high scorer for the X-Women with 12 points on the afternoon.
With the win the REDS advance to the AUS championship game, awaiting the winner of Acadia and UPEI.
