Katie Upham appointed head coach of STFX women’s basketball program
STFX Director of Athletics & Recreation Leo MacPherson is pleased to announce the appointment of Katie Upham as head coach of the STFX X-Women Basketball program.
ANTIGONISH, NS – STFX Director of Athletics & Recreation Leo MacPherson is pleased to announce the appointment of Katie Upham as head coach of the STFX X-Women Basketball program. Upham was previously in the role on an interim basis since December.
"We are very pleased to name Katie Upham as the head coach of our X-Women Basketball program," comments MacPherson. "Over the past four months, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership, a strong connection with our student-athletes, and a clear vision for the future of the program. She is an outstanding person, a coach with tremendous potential, and we are excited to support her as she continues to build something special here at STFX."
Coach Upham notes that she is "incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading the X-Women Basketball program. As a former STFX student-athlete, it is a privilege to now lead a program with such a strong tradition of excellence both on and off the court. I am excited to build upon what we've started and to keep pushing the program forward."
A native of North River, N.S., Coach Upham previously served as X-Women lead assistant coach this past fall, prior to taking over as interim head coach. She fulfilled an assistant coaching role at STFX in 2024-25 where she was also a part of the U SPORTS Female Coaching Apprentice Program and able to spend a week observing the NBA's Utah Jazz and the University of Utah women's basketball program. Upham is currently the head coach of the Basketball Nova Scotia U15 girls provincial team that will compete at the national championships in August.
Upham played two seasons for the X-Women from 2022-24 and was the team's most valuable player in 2022-23. She holds the STFX record for most assists (11) in a single game. Prior to coming to STFX she competed with the University of Calgary Dinos, helping to lead that program to two U SPORTS Final 8 appearances. She holds a Kinesiology degree from Calgary and an Education degree from STFX.
