X-Women fall just short, losing 69-67 to Axewomen in exciting, back and forth game that came down to the wire
Wolfville, NS – The STFX X-Women fell just short Saturday night, losing 69-67 to the Acadia Axewomen in an exciting, back and forth game that came down to the wire on Stu Aberdeen court in front of a sold out crowd.
The first quarter saw both teams going basket for basket with neither squad exceeding a lead of more than three points. The score was tied at 17 after the opening frame.
The X-Women outscored the Axewomen 15-10 in the second quarter to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room at haltime. Reegan Bell scored 10 points for X in the opening half. Sarah Delorey netted 10 for Acadia.
STFX started off the third quarter with consecutive three-pointers from Ava MacNutt and Krissy Cooper to go up by 11 points, 38-27. The Axewomen went on an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to close the gap to three points, but STFX's Michaela James drained a three to stop that run.
The Axewomen continued to chip away at the X lead and a three-pointer by Amelie Bouchard with three and a half minutes left pulled the home team to within a point, 45-44. Acadia outscored STFX 25-18 in the quarter and were up 52-50 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter remained close as both teams played with high intensity. The game was tied at 64 with a minute and a half to go thanks to a three-pointer by Abby Mercer.
The Axewomen then scored off a turnover and a free throw gave them a three-point lead, 67-64. Krissy Cooper drained a three from an off-balance shot to deadlock the game again with nine seconds to play.
But it was player of the game Sarah Delorey who would come up big for Acadia and sink a layup with only a second left to seal the win. She finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds on the night.
Emily Nunes-Sabean scored 14 for the Axewomen and Taya Dixon contributed 13.
James was the top scorer for the X-Women with 15 off the bench, including a trio from three-point range. Bell finished with 10.
With the win, Acadia improves to 11-4 on the season, moving into a tie for second place with STFX, who drop to 11-5.
The X-Women will be back in action next Saturday, January 31st when they host the first place UNB REDS (15-1) on home court at 6:00 pm.
