X-Women down Sea-Hawks 76-40
Strong second quarter and pinpoint shooting help X-Women to big 76-40 win over Sea-Hawks
ANTIGONISH, NS - A strong second quarter and pinpoint shooting helped the STFX X-Women to a big 76-40 win over the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks on Saturday afternoon on Coach K Court.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Kristine Cooper had an outstanding game for the Blue and White, with 11 points, 19 rebounds, and eight assists. Her 19 rebounds tied the X-Women record for most rebounds in a single game. Also holding that record is teammate Shannon Neita who led all scorers in the game with 14 points. Former X-Women Tara Kinnear, Lia St, Pierre and Kim Kingsbury are also in the X record book for 19 boards in a game.
On the Sea-Hawks side of the ball, Amelia Mitchell had 10 points and 12 boards to lead Memorial.
The X-Women opened the game with a 4-1 lead before Memorial battled back. Things were even early with the teams trading scores but two three-pointers from Reegan Bell helped put the X-Women up 16-15 going into the second quarter.
The second quarter was all X-Women, who scored 11 straight points before the Sea-Hawks got on the board. The stingy X defense continued to pressure the visitors, and a Ofer Caspi triple gave the home side a 16-point advantage four minutes before the buzzer.
The X-Women continued to cause problems for Memorial shooters, who managed only three points in the quarter, while the X-Women put up 23 and held a 39-18 lead at halftime.
The Sea-Hawks were first on the board in the third, with Brooke Ledevehat hitting a triple in the opening 30 seconds. The teams traded scores in the first six minutes as the Sea-Hawks worked to get back into the game, but sharp shooting from the X-Women saw the home side carry a 24-point lead (57-33) into the final stanza.
It was more of the same in the fourth, as the X-Women kept hitting shots while limiting scores from the Sea-Hawks. STFX finished with 30 points from three-point land, and a similar number of points off turnovers.
The X-Women return to Coach K Court on Friday, January 16, for a 6:00 pm game against the Dalhousie Tigers. Memorial also hits the court next Friday, when they host Acadia.
