X-Women basketball drop close game to SMU

The X-Women basketball team opened their AUS season on the losing end of a close 80-75 game against the CIS ranked No. 5 Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday evening in Halifax.
After StFX got out to a 26-19 lead after the first quarter of play, the Huskies drew to within a single point at half-time as the X-Women led 41-40. The home team Huskies outscored the X-Women 23-19 in the third quarter to establish a 63-60 advantage after thirty minutes of play, and they were able to hold onto the victory.
Justine Colley scored 25 points and had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks to lead the Huskies, while Laura Langille scored 23 and had 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Naomie Fequiere contributed 13 points and had eight rebounds.
The Huskies and X-Women both shot 43.5% from field goal range, while Saint Mary’s was 44.0% in three-point shooting and 47.4% from the free-throw line. StFX was 31.3% from three-point range and 62.5% from the charity line.
Lia St. Pierre and Kolbi Roper both played strong games for the X-Women, guided by first year head coach Augy Jones. St. Pierre scored 22 points and had 9 rebounds and 3 steals, while Roper scored 21 points and had 8 rebounds. Freshman forward Lindsay Lessard had a double-double night with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The X-Women (0-1) will play next on Wednesday evening in Sydney, NS against the Cape Breton Capers (1-1), then follow-up with their home-opener at the StFX Oland Centre on Saturday, November 17th at 6:00 pm against the UPEI Panthers (0-2). The UNB Varsity Reds (0-2) will be in town Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 pm game.
