X-Women teams raise $700 for breast cancer initiatives
ANTIGONISH, NS – The StFX Department of Athletics hosted their annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising event this past Saturday at the StFX Oland Centre. The fifth annual ‘Serve Up a Cure’ was hosted at the X-Women volleyball game, while the sixth annual ‘Shoot for the Cure’ took place at the X-Women basketball game. Both events raised a total of $700 in support of breast cancer initiatives.
StFX women’s basketball head coach Matt Skinn comments, “We were happy to once again have the X-Women be a part of this annual worthwhile cause that is also a nation-wide initiative with the CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association. We were pleased with the support of our fans.”
Likewise, StFX women’s volleyball head coach Danny Da Costa echoed Skinn’s sentiments, “It was great to have our X-Women team contribute to something that obviously affects a great number of families. It is a worthwhile cause, and we appreciate the ongoing community support.”
Each X-Women team wore pink warm-up T-shirts and pink-themed accessories during the game to lend their support to the cause. Fans in attendance donned pink clothing for the occasion and $700 was raised through the sale of pink StFX Athletics T-shirts, a 50/50 draw, a silent auction and general donations towards the cause.
All the proceeds are being donated to Cathy’s Place, the cancer resource room at the local St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, as well as to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Atlantic Division).
