Tanira McClurkin had the hot hand as the defending AUS women’s basketball champion Cape Breton Capers raced into the holiday break with their fourth straight win Wednesday.
The Capers won a seesaw clash with the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 71-68 at Sullivan Field House.
McClurkin had 13 points in the second quarter on her way to a game-high 19.
St. F.X. led 64-63 in the fourth quarter on a Rebecca Sheehan three-pointer. Spencer Lockhart made another three for the X-Women to make it a one-point game with 35 seconds to go.
But the Capers were clutch from the foul line to close it out.
Cape Breton heads into the break at 5-2. St. F.X. is 2-1 with a pair of games this weekend at UPEI.
St. F.X. inched ahead in the second quarter before McClurkin, a transfer out of Baltimore City Community College, made consecutive three-pointers for a 25-25 tie.
The sophomore guard hit from long range again moments later as the Capers went up by a point. Her fourth trey of the half allowed the Capers to take a 38-34 lead to intermission.
St. F.X. came out strong in the second half with a 9-2 run and Sheryl Chisholm put her team up 43-40 with a three-pointer.
Nicole Works and Stephanie Toxopeus each added 11 and rookie Kayla McCarron 10 for Cape Breton. Works had 13 assists to set the school record.
Chisholm had 13 points, Kirsten Jones and Spencer Lockhart 11 each and Donisha Young 10 for St. F.X.
The men’s half of the doubleheader, a rematch of last year’s AUS final, was on the court at press time.
