Basketball X-Women go 2-1 on Quebec swing
In a three day tournament which saw action from Laval, Queen’s, and a Montreal senior women’s team, the StFX X-Women put on a great showing finishing with a record of 2-1, pulling off two impressive victories.
The first game saw the X-Women take on the Laval Rouge et Or in a game that went down to the wire – literally. With a close game throughout, the ladies needed one more quarter to settle the final as they forced overtime after edging out a one point victory in the fourth quarter. Kate Kolarova had a huge game for the X-Women scoring 20 points while tournament all-star Ashley Stephen scored 17 points in an astonishing 51 minutes of play. A ridiculous ten players combined from both teams played 40+ minutes of basketball on Friday night with Stephen leading the minutes for X while Laval’s Elyse Jobin racked in a total of 61 minutes in a losing effort.
Saturday’s 70-56 win against Queen’s was much different than the one the night before as the Golden Gaels proved to be no match for the X-Women. With a balanced attack that gave StFX some time to rest from a midnight madness game just one night before, the blue and white ran all over Queen’s defeating them by the 14 point margin. Lead by monster games from Donisha Young – 12 points, 13 rebounds – and Kiley Delong’s 12 rebounds, including 7 offensive, the X-Women took a lead and never looked back. Rounding out the scoring for the X-Women were Sheryl Chisholm and Camesha Mackenzie with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Golden Gaels failed to have one player score in double figures as the StFX defence was just too much for the team from Kingston, Ont.
The third and final game of the weekend would prove to give the X-Women their biggest test of the tournament as they took on a senior women’s team out of Montreal. After a long weekend the X-Women still put on a good showing, falling short 74-61 against the more experienced Dynamo who were lead by 22 points from P. Morin. The X-Women won the second quarter and tied the fourth quarter which was impressive in itself for the young team.
After an opening weekend tournament at Dalhousie University, the X-Women turned a lot of heads in Quebec. The win over Laval was impressive as a week ago the Rouge et Or knocked off two CIS top ten teams.
The X-Women next see action when they host the Dalhousie Tigers this coming Saturday at 3:00 pm at StFX Oland Stadium in another exhibition match up.
