Patterson and Ash set STFX records in mile
School records fall as X-Men and X-Women compete Athletics NB meet at Irving Oil Fieldhouse
Saint John, NB – The X-Men and X-Women track team competed at the Athletics NB meet Friday evening and Saturday at the Irving Oil Fieldhouse.
Friday night featured the 3000m races where the X-Women had five competitors in the field of 17. Eileen Benoit won the race with a time of 9:44.35. Sarah Watson was third at 10:06.56 and Eden Hildebrand cracked the top 10 in tenth spot with a 10:59.81 result. Quincy Rotsaert-Smith was 14th at 11:26.66 and Reanne Jean 15th at 11:27.73.
Brett King was the lone X racer in the men's 3000m and his time of 8:44.62 was good enough for fifth overall amidst the field of 38.
On Saturday morning, a pair of STFX runners set school records in their respective one mile races. Liam Patterson's time of 4:10.10 set a new STFX record as he placed third overall in the men's mile, while Caroline Ash won the women's mile with a time of 4:46.47, also setting a new STFX record. Caden Lee was right with her on the finish line, coming second at 4:46.48. Ash and Lee's times automatically qualify them for the U SPORTS Championship being held in March at the University of Manitoba,
Also competing in the mile for the X-Women were Hannah MacIntyre (4:53.94) in fourth, Poppy Moon (4:45.07) in sixth, Sarah Watson (5:03.22) in eighth and Poppy Thomson (5:42.52) in 21st.
In the men's mile, featuring a large field of 38 racers, Luke MacDonald (4:11.89) came sixth, Brett King (4:17.28) was eighth, Liam McCullagh (4:24.08) was 11th, Conlan MacKenzie (4:36.81) was 21st and Landyn Cooke-Bithrey (4:38.79) was 22nd.
Rounding out the weekend was Jillian Bennett in the women's 1000m race where she came ninth overall with a time of 1:47.83.
Next on the schedule is the SMU Open, scheduled for Feb. 7th at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.
