X-Women 4x800m relay team sets new STFX record at Athletics NS meet Friday night
Halifax, NS – The X-Men and X-Women Track teams competed Friday and Saturday in their first competition of 2026 at the Athletics NS meet at the Canada Games Centre.
Friday night featured the 3000m and 4x800m races. Rebecca Haney was the lone X-Women runner in the women's 3000m race and she placed 7th overall in the field of 20 racers, finishing with a time of 10:44.35.
In the men's 3000m, STFX's Luke MacDonald took top spot with a time of 8:32.01, besting the field of 35 competitors. Teammate Brett King was fourth overall with an 8:32. 01 showing.
The X-Women 4x800m team of Caroline Ash, Caden Lee, Poppy Moon and Hannah McIntyre set a new X-Women record in the event with their first-place time of 8:57.38. The time broke the previous fastest record set just last year in Windsor, Ont. at the U SPORTS national championship, by the same four X runners. The time also qualifies the quartet for the 2026 U SPORTS championship.
Saturday's events featured multiple STFX competitors in the 1000m and 1500m events.
In the women's 1000m race, Hannah McIntyre took top spot with a time of 2:52.40, while Eileen Benoit was second at 2:58.32 and Jillian Bennett 7th at 3:14.09.
Nine X-Women competed in the 1500m race that featured 33 runners. Caroline Ash bested the field, finishing with the top time of 4:26.48 and setting a new STFX record in the process. Caden Lee was second with a 4:27.71 result, and Eileen Benoit fourth at 4:34.05. Poppy Moon (4:39.04) and Sarah Watson (4:48.42) also finished in the top ten in 6th and 7th places, respectively. Eden Hildebrand (4:55.36) and Poppy Thomson (4:55.78) were 11th and 12th, while Reanne Jean (5:13.93) and Paige Quinn (5:15.01) rounded out the X placings in 19th and 21st.
In the men's 1500m race, veteran runner Liam Patterson was the first place finisher atop the field of 32 competitors, clocking in at 3:53.74. Liam McCullagh was second with a 4:00.34 result, and Conlan MacKenzie ran to 17th with a 4:23.45 time.
Landyn Cooke-Bithrey was the lone X-Men competitor in the 1000m race and he came 8th overall with a time of 2:42.26.
Next on the schedule for the teams will be the Athletics NB meet Jan. 30-31 at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, NB.
