ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Men got back in the win column with a decisive 3-1 victory over the visiting Acadia Axemen on Sunday afternoon at STFX Stadium. The win moves the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked X-Men into second place in the AUS standings.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Logan Rieck put the home side up early, converting a penalty kick in the opening minute of the match.
Samuel Barrowcliffe made it 2-0 in the 29th minute, converting a superb passing play from Issac VanWychen and Nico Goldsztein.
VanWychen made it 3-0 six minutes later, heading one in off a cross from Noah MacIntyre.
STFX controlled possession for most of the match, though Acadia had their moments on the ball. The Axemen got one back late, with Blaise Mellema knocking one home with under five minutes to play. The Axemen almost added another before the final whistle, but Cameron Greenlaw came up big with a save on a PK.
The X-Men have the week off and will next take to the field in Newfoundland with a game against the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m.
