(Sackville, N.B) – The U Sports ranked No. 8 StFX X-Men defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 7-0 Friday evening at Alumni Field.
With the win the X-Men (6-1-2) clinched a berth in the AUS championship, scheduled for November 3-6 at UNB. Cape Breton and Acadia are the only other teams to clinch a playoff berth.
With the loss the Mounties (0-8-1) losing streak was extended to six games.
The X-Men scored four goals in the opening half, two coming from wingback Aaron Thibeau. Second year defender Joe Edgerton and third year midfielder Marco Zanchetto also tallied for the X-Men.
Mounties Goalkeeper Seiwa Yanagi was continually tested as StFX outshot Mount Allison 22-9 in the game.
Second half goals came from freshman forward Tane Caubo and a pair of unassisted markers from second year midfielder Dan Hayfield.
X-Men goalkeeper Thomas Pieroway earned the shutout victory in the StFX net.
The Mounties are in action again this Sunday against the Memorial Sea-Hawks. Kick-off is at 3:15 pm. The X-Men travel to Fredericton on Sunday afternoon for a 4:15 pm game against UNB.
