X-Men shutout Tigers 1-0 in season opener
The X-Men opened up the AUS season with a 1-0 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night in Halifax. Freshman forward Serge Dossou’s goal in the 53rd minute held up as the game winner.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half of the game, though the X-Men had a couple good scoring chances late in the half.
Dossou’s goal came early in the second half and gave the X-Men a lift. The Tigers pressured hard in the final minutes of the game, looking for the tying goal. X-Men keeper Andrew MacDonald made a clutch save during injury time to keep the X-Men alive.
Nathan Rogers thought he had scored the tying goal for the Tigers in injury time, but the goal was called back due to an offside call. StFX breathed a sigh of relief and held off the Dalhousie attack to earn the 1-0 victory.
MacDonald earned the shutout win in nets for StFX, while Jason Ross took the loss for Dalhousie. Rogers earned player of the game honors for the Tigers, with midfielder Michael Al-Assadi taking home player of the game honors for the X-Men.
With the victory, the X-Men now look ahead to their home opener on Friday, September 14th when they will again face the Dalhousie Tigers. Game time is 7:15 pm at StFX Oland Stadium.
