X-Men Hockey welcome AHL forward Matthew Struthers to 2021-22 roster
StFX men’s hockey head coach Brad Peddle is excited to announce the addition of forward Matthew Struthers to the 2021-22 roster.
ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX men's hockey head coach Brad Peddle is excited to announce the addition of forward Matthew Struthers to the 2021-22 roster.
"Matt is an outstanding addition to our program, he is a player we have been following for a few years and we are very excited to welcome him to X-Men Hockey," comments Peddle.
"He had five strong years in the OHL with Owen Sound and North Bay, then another good season with Cleveland in the AHL. Matt has now decided to pursue his education and continue his development for pro hockey at StFX."
Peddle notes that Struthers is a "big, strong offensive center who plays a very complete game who will make an immediate impact to our lineup. He will be a great fit to our locker room and our goals. He is a very high character individual with great leadership skills who will bring pro experience to our group both on and off the ice."
A 6'2", 192-pound center from Milton, Ont., Struthers last played with the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate team for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a reduced 2020-21 season with 19 games. In his five seasons with Owen Sound and North Bay in the OHL, Struthers amassed 217 points (91 G, 126 A) in 298 games played. He also had a five-game stint with Laval in the AHL in the 2018-19 season. Struthers represented Canada at the 2015-16 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where his white team came out on top of the eight-team event as he tallied a goal and an assist in six games played.
"I couldn't be more excited to join StFX," says Struthers. "The school and campus are both first class. Joining a team who I think is going to be competitive for years to come was a no brainer. I believe X is the best of both worlds where it's somewhere I can get a fantastic degree and grow as a person while also trying to further my development as a player and return to pro hockey."
A former teammate of current X-Men Santino Centorame and Matthew Phillip, Struthers plans to study Business at STFX this fall. He joins previously announced recruits forwards Jacob Hudson (Antigonish, NS), Connor Roberts (Owen Sound, ON), Zack Trott (Honeywood, ON), and Cameron Hebert (St. Andrews West, ON), along with defenceman Clark Webster (Kelvin Grove, PE).
