X-Men edged 5-3 by Varsity Reds in AUS hockey play

In a battle of top-ten teams in Canada, the No. 4 UNB Varsity Reds edged the No. 7 StFX X-Men 5-3 in AUS men’s hockey action Friday night in Fredericton.
After the Varsity Reds jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the first period, X-Men freshman Steven Kuhn cut the deficit to two with an unassisted goal at 11:45.
Chad Denny tallied the only goal of the second period, restoring a three-goal advantage for the Varsity Reds.
At 11:01 of the third period, the blue and white made it 4-2 on a power play goal from Jarrad Struthers, with assists coming from Michael Kirkpatrick and Bronson Maschmeyer.
Thirty-two seconds later, the X-Men cut the lead to one on a Brad Cuzner marker. Nick Pageau and X-Men captain Murdock MacLellan had the assists.
The blue and white rally fell short when Matt Fillier scored an empty-net goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Varsity Reds outshot the X-Men 40 -27, including 17 to 5 in the opening period. Freshman Drew Owsley made 35 saves for the X-Men in the loss.
The blue and white will return to action Saturday evening when they travel to Charlottetown to face the UPEI Panthers.
