Hockey X-Men earn wins in New Brunswick
The StFX X-Men, ranked fifth in the CIS, scored a win and a tie in New Brunswick over the weekend.
Saturday night, the blue and white dropped a 4-2 decision to the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus.
After Raphael Pouliot opened the scoring in the first period, Steven Kuhn replied, unassisted, for the X-Men at 18:16.
Pouliot, with his second, and Guillaume Parenteau, on the power play, gave Moncton a 3-1 lead after two periods.
At 15:01 of the third, X-Men defenseman Spencer McAvoy sliced the lead to 3-2.
Parenteau notched his second, an empty-netter, at 19:01.
Joey Perricone made 24 saves for the X-Men as the blue and white outshot Moncton 32-27.
Friday night, in Fredericton, Josh Day scored the game winner with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to lead the X-Men to a 3-2 win over the St. Thomas Tommies. Brennan Wray and Jason Bast, with his third point of the game, drew assists.
Bast opened the scoring at 7:23 of the first period, on assists from Wray and Ted Stephens.
Alexandre Leduc tied it for the Tommies before the end of the opening frame.
In the second period, Spencer McAvoy, on the power play, gave the X-Men a 2-1 advantage, with Bast and Michael Kirkpatrick drawing assists.
At 18:13, the Tommies drew even on a goal from Christian Morin.
Freshman Drew Owsley made 29 saves for the win. The Tommies outshot the X-Men 31-22.
The X-Men (4-2) return to action this weekend with road games versus UNB Varsity Reds (Friday) and UPEI Panthers (Saturday).
