Hockey X-Men fall 4-2 to Varsity Reds

The StFX X-Men, No. 7 in the CIS, dropped their first game of the AUS regular season Saturday night.
The visiting UNB Varsity Reds, ranked second in the country, skated to a 4-2 win over the blue and white at the Keating Centre.
The Varsity Reds jumped to a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Nick MacNeil, on the power play, and Thomas Nesbitt.
At 14:37, Jarrad Struthers cut the lead in half on the power play, with Josh Day and R.D. Chisholm drawing assists.
Ben Shutron restored the UNB two-goal lead at 3-1 at 17:28. Colby Pridham and MacNeil assisted on the power play tally.
The X-Men cut the lead to 3-2 with the only goal of the second period. At 14:21, on the power play, Michael Kirkpatrick finished a nifty three-way passing play with line-mates Brennen Wray and Jason Bast.
Chad Denny, with his third point of the game, scored unassisted at 3:02 of the third period to extend the Varsity Reds lead to 4-2.
The X-Men could not beat Daniel Lacosta the rest of the way, who made 23 saves for the win.
Joey Perricone, with 19 saves, took his first loss of the season.
The X-Men will return to action this weekend with road games versus St. Thomas Tommies and Moncton Blue Eagles.
The blue and white are back on home ice Friday, November 9, against the Dalhousie Tigers at the Keating Centre.
