X-Men drop 2nd overtime game
The X-Men hockey team dropped their second overtime game in as many nights, as the UPEI Panthers skated away with a 3-2 overtime win at the StFX Keating Centre Saturday night.
\r\nThe teams played to a scoreless first period of play and the puck did not find the back of the net until 15:12 into the second period when forward Brett Morrison scored for the X-Men. Chris Hulit and Tyson Aitcheson assisted on the play.
\r\nStFX and UPEI then exchanged third period goals. Jared Gomes scored for the Panthers 8:42 in the final frame to tie the game at a goal a piece, then Bryce Swan gave the X-Men a 2-1 advantage less than 2 minutes later. Phil Mangan and Sean Donovan assisted.
\r\nUnfortunately the lead did not hold long as Taylor Raszka was able to beat StFX netminder Bryan Gillis at 11:46 and even the game for the second time.
\r\nThe 2-2 tie held through the end of regulation, sending the game into sudden death overtime. The OT hero was Panthers Howie Martin who scored 1:39 into the extra period, giving UPEI the two-point victory.
\r\nThe X-Men drop to 5-1-3 after the two weekend games, but remain in second place in the AUS with 13 points, three behind the first place UNB Varsity Reds. Next on their schedule is a rematch against both UNB and UPEI as the X-Men travel to Fredericton on Friday night and Charlottetown on Saturday.
