X-Men wins keep rolling with road victory over Acadia
X-Men hold off Axemen for big 82-79 win on the road Saturday night
Wolfville, NS – The STFX X-Men held off the Acadia Axemen for a big 82-79 win on the road Saturday night.
Phoenyx Wyse had a double-double night for the White and Blue, scoring 21 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. DJ Jackson scored 20 and had 8 rebounds and 9 assists, while Koay Thomas netted 15 and Owen Frayne contributed 12 points.
Leading scorer for the Acemen was Robbie Grant with 19 points on the night.
The win marked the eighth in a row for the AUS first place X-Men, who improve to 13-3 on the season, while Acadia drops to 10-5.
The opening quarter saw the X-Men outscore the Axemen 24-14. Matt Pennell drained a three-pointer with two and a half minutes left to put the X-Men up by six, as they closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run.
Acadia closed the gap to three points early in the second quarter as a three from Aaron Simmons pulled the score to 26-23. The X-Men then went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead. They maintained their lead and were up 45-36 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter saw STFX continue their offensive attack as they went on a 5-0 run to start the quarter, pushing the lead to 14 points. After a timeout, the Axemen started to claw their way back into the game, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Ryan Regault.
Acadia went on an 8-0 run late in the quarter to close the gap to three points, 59-56. AUS leading scorer DJ Jackson closed out the third with a hoop-and-harm as X was up 62-56 heading into the final frame.
The Axemen came ready to play and quickly got back into the game in the fourth quarter. A long ball from Malko Young tied things up at 65 two minutes in, and the teams continued to trade baskets and keep the score close.
The score was tied 74-74 with four minutes to go. After close back-and-forth action, Jackson and Frayne were clutch down the stretch for the X-Men as they pulled ahead and hung onto the lead to take home the 82-79 win.
STFX will be back in action next Saturday, January 31st when they host the second place UNB REDS (12-5) on home court at 8:00 pm.
