X-Men take down Tigers in mid-week action
U SPORTS No. 10 ranked X-Men extend win streak to seven games with 86-76 win over Tigers Wednesday night
Halifax, NS – The U SPORTS No. 10 ranked STFX X-Men extended their win streak to seven games with an 86-76 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Wednesday night at Dalplex.
DJ Jackson scored a game-high 23 points for the X-Men, along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and a block. Owen Frayne scored 15 points and Nic Niare netted 13 and had 5 rebounds.
Lydell Husbands was the top scorer for the Tigers with 20 points and 4 rebounds.
The teams traded baskets throughout the opening five minutes of the first quarter in a close-scoring opening to the game. The X-Men went on a seven-point run to take a 17-10 lead midway through, and built up a lead thanks in part to 11 points from league-leading scorer Jackson. STFX was up 34-26 heading into the second quarter of play.
The Tigers clawed back in the second and pulled to within two points, trailing 43-41 midway through the quarter as the X-Men shooting went cold. A trio of free throws from Jacob Christie then gave the Tigers their first lead of the game, 44-43. The back and forth action continued and halftime closed out with Dalhousie holding a 50-49 edge.
Jackson led the X-Men with 15 points in the opening half, while Christie scored 14 for the Tigers.
The X-Men regained their lead - 56-54 - two minutes into the third quarter thanks to a three-pointer from Jackson. STFX held onto the lead throughout the quarter. A three-pointer from Matt Pennell with a minute left in the frame put the X-Men up 65-58 as they closed out the quarter leading by the same score.
The X-Men went on a 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter to extend their lead by 13 points to 73-60. The Tigers fought back but could only close the gap to five points as X held onto their lead to close out the game with the 86-76 victory.
With the win the X-Men improve to 12-3 on the season atop the AUS conference. They also officially clinched an AUS playoff berth with the victory.
They will be back in action on Saturday, January 24th when they travel to Wolfville to take on the second place Acadia Axemen (10-4) in an 8:00 pm game.
