X-Men power past Panthers 92-74
X-Men use strong shooting and hard defense in convincing 92-74 win over Panthers
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Men used strong shooting and hard defense in a convincing 92-74 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers on Saturday night on Coach K Court.
AUS leading scorer DJ Jackson had another big night for STFX picking up Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game honors with 29 points. Nicholas Niare added15 points and 13 rebounds for the X-Men, who improved their record to 6-3 on the season.
UPEI player of the game Kyree Thompson had 11 for the visitors, while Nicholas Gonzalez Longarela had 14 points and 14 boards for the visitors.
Jackson knocked down four points in a row to open the game and kick off a 13-5 run by the X-Men. A three-pointer from Tarrence Booker and a jumper from Cameron Brown got some ground back for the Panthers, but STFX kept hitting shots and moved ahead by 9 by the end of the quarter.
A pair of free-throws from Brown halfway through the second quarter brought the Panthers within three, but four points from Niare offered a little breathing room for the Blue and White. A big block from Niare led to a pair of free-throws from Jackson as X-Men tried to extend the advantage, but two free-throws from Panther Kyree Thompson made it a six-point game at halftime, 43-37.
A big alley-oop from Owen Frayne to Koat Thomas drew a cheer from the STFX fans midway through the third quarter as the X-Men extended their lead. The home side went into the final quarter shooting 50 per cent, helping them to a 12-point advantage. The Panthers were 14-41 from the field at that point but had 22 points from the free throw line.
A jumper from Longarela made it a 10-point game three minutes into the final stanza, but that's as close as the Panthers came to a comeback as the X-Men pulled ahead by 18 with two minutes to go.
The X-Men hit the road next weekend for a game against the University of Cape Breton Capers on Saturday, November 29, at 8 p.m. The Panthers return to Charlottetown next weekend to host the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday, November 28, at 8 p.m.
