STFX stays unbeaten with gritty road win over Dalhousie
X-Men remain perfect on the season with 83–74 victory over Tigers
HALIFAX, NS – The STFX X-Men remained perfect on the season with an 83–74 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday night at the Dalplex, improving to 4–0 in AUS men's basketball play.
After trailing 14–12 after the opening quarter, the X-Men found their rhythm in the second, outscoring the Tigers 28–20 to take control of the game. STFX shot 47% in the third and 54% in the fourth to hold off a determined DAL squad down the stretch.
Fifth-year guard Tariq Armstrong was electric off the bench, pouring in a team-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding five assists. Owen Frayne had a strong all-around performance with 17 points and seven assists, while forward Phoenyx Wyse dominated the glass with 17 points and 17 rebounds for a massive double-double. Nicolas Niare chipped in 12 points and 10 boards, giving STFX a strong interior presence.
The X-Men won the battle on the boards 47–37, including 16 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points. STFX also held a 42–30 edge in points in the paint.
Dalhousie had balanced scoring, led by Caleb Stewart's 16 points. Ukiah Best added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench, while Riley Stewart and Austin Thomson chipped in 10 and 9, respectively. Despite a solid 42 percent shooting night, the Tigers couldn't contain STFX's late-game execution.
The X-Men closed the contest with poise, outscoring the Tigers 23–21 in the final frame to seal the road win.
The X-Men will look to extend their unbeaten streak when they return home Wednesday night, November 5th to host the Acadia Axemen in an 8:00 pm game on Coach K Court.
