Kirkpatrick and Vernon co-winners of Male Athlete of the Week, Normore named Female Athlete of the Week
X-Men hockey forward Michael Kirkpatrick was named the StFX Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 12th, 2012. Michael, a first year Arts student from North Sydney, NS, combined for 3 goals, 3 assists and a shootout winner in three games this past week. In Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Dalhousie, Michael scored one goal and had one assist and was named Player of the Game, while in Friday’s 5-4 win over Saint Mary’s, he collected another goal and an assist, and also scored the go-ahead goal in the shootout to lead the X-Men to the win and officially clinch an AUS playoff berth. Saturday’s 5-4 win over Dalhousie brought another goal and an assist for Michael as he closed out the regular season tied for first overall in team scoring with 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists). He is 8th overall in AUS scoring and first amongst all freshmen.
X-Men basketball guard Tyrell Vernon was named the StFX Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 12th, 2012. Tyrell, a third year Arts student from Hamilton, ON, was a big factor in the X-Men’s two important four point victories this past weekend. In their 87-82 win Saturday over Acadia, Tyrell scored 24 points and had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, followed by a 10 point, 4 rebound, 5 assist performance in StFX’s close 70-69 overtime win over UPEI on Sunday afternoon. Tyrell made a critical steal and basket with less than a minute to play in the overtime win over UPEI which vaulted the X-Men into a first place tie in the AUS standings with the Panthers. Tyrell is currently fourth in conference assists averaging 5.06 per game.
X-Women hockey forward Alex Normore was named the StFX Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 12th, 2012. Alex, a second year Human Kinetics student from Bedford, NS, collected three goals and an assist with a plus 4 rating in the X-Women’s 6-1 win over Saint Mary’s Friday night in Halifax. The hat trick marked her second one this season as Alex currently leads both the AUS conference and the entire nation in scoring with 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points in 21 games to date. She is the reigning CIS Rookie of the Year and has picked up where she left off last season as a major scoring threat for the first place X-Women.
