Mounties defeat X-Men 24-20
Mounties keep playoff hopes alive with 24-20 victory over X-Men
Sackville, NB – The Mount Allison Mounties kept their playoff hopes alive with a 24-20 victory over the STFX X-Men Saturday afternoon.
The win was the first one of the season for the Mounties (1-6), who are currently tied with Acadia (1-5) and battling for the final AUS playoff position.
The X-Men drop to 4-2 and are tied with Bishop's (4-2) for second place. The top two teams in the standings earn the right to host the AUS semifinal playoff games. There are two weeks remaining in regular season play.
Tyson Heather got the X-Men on the board with a 24-yard field goal three minutes into the game.
Malcolm Bussey scored on a one-yard touchdown rush midway through the quarter to give the X-Men a 10-0 lead.
Heather booted his second field goal of the afternoon from 11 yards out midway through the second quarter.
Mounties got on the board with a field goal of their own before the end of the half as they trailed 13-3 heading into the break.
Bussey scored his second touchdown of the game two and a half minutes into the second quarter, another from one yard out.
The Mounties replied with their first major of the game to cut the lead to 20-10. Jack Arsenault had a long 55-yard catch from Spencer Joudry, and was taken down on the one yard line, setting up first and goal. Nicolas Chabot ran it in for the touchdown.
With seven minutes to go in the quarter, Joudry again connected with Arsenault, this time for a 19-yard endzone catch as Mount A pulled to within three points, 20-17.
The home team took the lead at 12:30 of the fourth quarter when Chabot scored another one-yard touchdown plunge.
Trailing 24-20, Heather missed wide on a 36-yard field goal attempt with just over eight minutes to play.
The X-Men had the ball with 1:44 left in the game but turned it over on downs after they were unable to convert on third and five. Thet regained possession with 1:15 left but again were unable to score and the Mounties held on for the win.
STFX will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 18th in a 3:00 pm game against Bishop's.
