Concordia self-discloses use of an ineligible player

MONTREAL- The Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) announced changes to the RSEQ university football league standings after Concordia University self-disclosed an administrative error that led to the use of an ineligible player in its first four regular season games this season.

Concordia declared to both the CIS and RSEQ on October 9, 2012 that the football program is in violation of CIS eligibility article 40.10.4.3.1.1 limiting the number of years a student athlete can participate in CIS competition.

An automatic sanction of forfeiture has been applied in Concordia’s victories over the Bishop’s Gaiters on September 1, 2012 and victory over the St. Francis-Xavier X-Men on September 15, 2012. The final scores in each game will be listed as 1-0. The two other games in which the ineligible player participated resulted in Concordia losses, and as such the outcome and final score not change. All individual player statistics with the exception of the ineligible player will be retained.

"We recently discovered that an administrative error led to an ineligible student athlete participating in our first four football games this season,” said Katie Sheahan, Director of Recreation and Athletics at Concordia University. “Although we are disappointed for the members of our football team who have worked so hard this season, we are fully supportive of the sanctions that have been applied by the CIS and RSEQ.”

As a result of the sanctions, Concordia’s record will be adjusted to 0-6, while Bishop’s record will improve to 3-3.  Atlantic University Sport (AUS) will change the record of the X-Men to 2-3.

As per RSEQ and CIS policy, the name of the student-athlete will not be released.
