Axemen 24, X-Men 11: At Raymond Field in Wolfville, the Acadia Axemen matched last year’s win total with a 24-11 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
Acadia, 2-6 last season, will start the week tied for first with Mount Allison at 2-1. St. F.X., 5-0 to begin 2009, joins Saint Mary’s in the conference basement at 0-3.
"We’re pleased to get the win," said Acadia head coach Jeff Cummins. "As much as they’ve lost a couple of games, it’s still tough to win in conference. It was a hard-fought game."
The X-Men had an eight-game winning streak in the series snapped.
Acadia led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter on a missed field goal.
Former Waterloo receiver Mike Squires gave the Axemen some separation, going 54 yards up a seam on a pass from Kyle Graves for an 8-0 lead at 5:06 of the second quarter.
A sack by fifth-year defensive lineman Adrian Saturley, followed by a shanked punt from Anthony Alix, had Acadia at the St. F.X. 25 later in the quarter. Matt Archibald turned Alix’s gift into a 21-yard field goal.
Alix missed a field goal for a single in the final seconds of the half to make it 11-1.
Archibald tacked on three more points six minutes into the third quarter. Alix matched it before the end of the quarter to keep his team within 10.
Acadia picked up a single point early in the fourth quarter just before Cory Wensley threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to rookie Devon Bailey. It was St. F.X.’s first touchdown on offence this season.
Acadia restored its lead on Brett Haenni’s 10-yard touchdown run, set up by an Axemen interception by Jarret Laycock.
Stu Clow finished with nine catches for 114 yards for the Axemen.
Acadia had 392 yards on offence, 242 yards through the air, to 213 for St. F.X.
