Snyder & Penner earn AUS Player of the Week honors

Quarterback Steve Snyder of the #6-ranked StFX X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 11th, 2009. Steve, a fifth year student from London, ON, completed 26-of-38 pass attempts for 317 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in StFX’s 21-10 over the Acadia Axemen Friday night in Wolfville, NS. Snyder also added 26 yards rushing on four attempts. His two touchdown passes covered 33 and 29 yards respectively and Steve has now thrown for over 300 yards in three of his past four outings. He currently leads the AUS in passing yards (1,630), completion percentage (65.7 per cent) and passing TD’s (9). In this past week’s game, Snyder moved into third place in career passing yardage in StFX school history, passing former StFX QB Peter Bowes. Steve has now passed for 4,428 career yards and trails only Nick Chessa (5,030) and Derek Martin (5,374) in school history.

StFX X-Men defensive back Reilly Penner is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 11th, 2009. Reilly, a third year Business student from Calgary, AB scored on a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown and the X-Men’s first score of the game in their 21-10 win over the Acadia Axemen this past weekend in Wolfville, NS. The interception marked Reilly’s fourth of the season and his second interception return for a touchdown in as many games. Penner is currently tied with teammate Dylan Hollohan for the lead in the AUS in interceptions. Reilly also added two tackles in the game on defense.

Gary Ross Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending October 11th, 2009. Despite a 35-7 loss to the #8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies, Ross, a two-time CIS all-Canadian, had another solid game, picking up 233 all-purpose yards. Gary, who returned three kickoffs for 56 yards and four punts for nine yards in the game, also added 79 yards receiving and 89 yards rushing, including a 61-yard scamper to set up the lone Mounties’ touchdown. Gary currently ranks second in AUS career punt return yardage (1,607) and second in AUS career kickoff return yardage (1,298 yards). He has also moved into a tie for fourth spot on the career receptions list (145) and seventh in career receiving yards (2,171 yards). Ross is a fourth year player from Windsor, ON.
