Huskies Dampen X Homecoming
October 4, 2008
In front of a Homecoming crowd in access of 4400 in Antigonish, NS, the No. 3 ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies remain undefeated (5-0) as they handed the StFX X-Men (2-3) their third loss of the season en route to a 32-26 win, silencing the enthusiastic hometown crowd.
The turning point in the game came early in the fourth quarter when X-Men punter Kyle Chisholm had a punt blocked by SMU’s Karl McCartney who returned the ball for a 60 yard touchdown run, giving Saint Mary’s a 29-26 edge. A Justin Palardy field goal, his third of the game, added to the Huskies lead and an X fumble in their final series of the game sealed the deal.
Saint Mary’s battled back after the X-Men opened the game with 23 consecutive points. After a team safety, the X-Men scored three touchdown runs, two by James Green who led all rushers in the game with 188 yards, and one by Jeremy Marchand.
The momentum then shifted in the Huskies favor as they countered with 22 unanswered point of their own. Saint Mary’s running back Devon Jones ran for two touchdowns to go along with a team safety and two Palardy field goals as the Huskies pulled to within a point in the third quarter.
After a Kyle Chisholm field goal increased the StFX lead to 26-22, the McCartney touchdown wiped out the potential Homecoming victory on home turf for the X-Men.
Saint Mary’s rookie quarterback Jack Creighton got the job done with 7 for 15 completions for 82 yards while X-Men QB Steve Snyder completed 13 of 26 for 188 yards.
The X-Men (2-3) will host the McGill Redmen (0-5) next Saturday afternoon in interlock competition while the Huskies (5-0) will host Montreal (2-3) Saturday evening live on the Score.
