STFX Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Derrick Jeyakumaran as our new Head Sports Performance Coach.
Jeyakumaran spent the previous year as the Assistant Sports Performance Coach at STFX and now moves into the head coaching role with the departure of Blake Hatt who recently accepted a position with the Belleville Senators.
"We are very excited to have Derrick move into the Head Sports Performance coaching position after a very meaningful first season with our teams," comments Manager of Varsity Athletics and Communications Krista McKenna.
"He possesses a deep knowledge in athlete development, injury prevention, and high-performance training and was a tremendous asset to our department this past season. He is very well-liked and respected by our student-athletes and coaches and has embraced the White and Blue family."
Jeyakumaran notes, "I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to how I can help grow this department and help our student-athletes perform at their best."
Derrick's journey in sport performance is grounded in both academic excellence and hands-on experience. He holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) with a specialization in Kinesiology from Ontario Tech University, as well as a Masters in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of Florida, specializing in Human Performance and Integrative Strength and Conditioning Science.
Prior to joining STFX Athletics, Jeyakumaran served as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Richmond Olympic Oval in BC, as well as a Sports Performance Coach at Simon Fraser University, where he designed and implemented training programs for a diverse range of sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, and track & field.
Before moving West, Derrick gained experience as a Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach at Elite Training Systems in Ontario, working with high-level organizations such as Whitby FC, Canada Women's Lacrosse, Toronto Arrows Rugby Academy, and several OHL, collegiate, and national-level athletes.
In addition to his certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Jeyakumaran is also certified as a Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist, a Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and an Exos Performance Specialist.
He will begin his new duties immediately and STFX Athletics will begin the search to fill the vacancy left in the Assistant Sport Performance position.
