Interim title removed from X-Women basketball coach Augy Jones
ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX Director of Athletics and Recreation Leo MacPherson is pleased to announce that the ‘interim’ designation has been removed from X-Women basketball head coach Augy Jones’ title as he has recently signed a three-year contract with the university.
“We are very pleased with Augy’s performance this past year and he has been rewarded with a multi-year contract,” comments MacPherson. “We have high expectations of our women’s basketball program and we are certainly on the right track with Augy at the helm.”
Jones had taken over the program on an interim basis in April, 2012 after Matt Skinn had moved on to the men’s head coaching position at Cape Breton.
He led the X-Women to a 13-7 record in AUS competition this past season and a berth in the AUS championship game. The X-Women finished the regular season in second place, earning a first round playoff bye. After defeating UNB in the AUS semi-finals, they lost out to eventual champion Saint Mary’s in the final game. Coach Jones also guided the X-Women to an 8-1 exhibition record.
“I am personally humbled and excited at the prospect of guiding the X-Women basketball program for the next three years,” says Jones. “I want to thank the players, parents and more specifically Leo MacPherson for their collective confidence in my ability to coach at the CIS level.”
“This opportunity is truly a dream come true for me,” continues Jones. “I would be remiss if I did not thank coaches like Terry Symonds, Bev Greenlaw, Bob Douglas, Steve Konchalski, Doug Partridge and Ross Quackenbush - who all had a tremendous influence on my coaching style. Finally I would like to thank my family and my 'X' family for all the support they have given me throughout this process.”
An X-Men basketball alumnus and Halifax native, Jones has an extensive coaching history prior to assuming the head coaching role with the X-Women. He served as an assistant coach with the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball program for four years and was an assistant coach with X-Men basketball mentor Steve Konchalski for three seasons in the early 2000’s. The years Jones was involved with the X-Men program included a CIS national championship in 2001, a CIS silver medal in 2004 and three AUS championship titles.
A national coaching certification program level two coach, Jones has also lent his coaching services to various Basketball Nova Scotia provincial squads, including the U14 boys provincial team in 2010, and regional training center ‘HRM’ head coach in 2009 (U14) and 2008 (U15). In 2010 he was named the head coach of the Nova Scotia boys Canada Games team for the upcoming 2013 Canada Games, and he has instructed at numerous basketball summer camps over the past two decades. Jones has international coaching experience as the head coach for the Bahamas Baptist Community College for the 2005-06 season, in addition to time spent in St. Lucia as the head coach of the VideBoutielle Secondary School from 1992-96, and assistant coach for the St. Lucian national team from 1992-94.
