Darkness cuts short Game 1 of Keating Cup
January 2, 2010
The StFX X-Men won Game 1 of the Keating Cup challenge 5-2 in a game that was cut short in the second intermission due to a power failure on the StFX campus. A winter storm is blowing through the Maritime provinces this weekend and heavy wind and rainy conditions contributed to the power outage, the first time ever during a StFX hockey game at the Keating Centre.
The game was called a victory for the X-Men, who were leading by the 5-2 score after two periods of play. The hometown X-Men and three-time defending Keating Cup champions, jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the visiting Ravens after the first period.
Carleton forward Justin Caruana opened the scoring in the game just 3:34 into the opening frame, as Mike Byrd and Andrew Self assisted on the play.
The X-Men quickly responded and tied the game just over a minute later as captain Chris Hulit scored on a one-timer from Phil Mangan and beat Ravens netminder Alex Archibald. Kevin Undershute also assisted on the play.
Phil Mangan picked up StFX’s second goal as he stole the puck in front of the net and popped it past Archibald in a nice, unassisted play at the 8 minute mark. Mangan then picked up his third point of the night and Hulit his second goal as he scored on the powerplay at 12:35 of the first period. Brett Morrison was also credited with an assist on the Hulit goal as the X-Men built a 3-1 lead.
Before the period was over, Bryce Swan would net the X-Men’s fourth goal, finding the open net as Morrison and Brett Robertson assisted.
The Ravens had a bit more bite in their game to start the second period and they hit the score sheet first as Ryan Berard scored a power play marker at 9:30. Christian Bordeau-Mifflen assisted on the play.
Kevin Undershute replied for the X-Men at the 14:26 minute mark of the third period, finding an open spot high in the Ravens net over the shoulder of Archibald. Mangan and Hulit assisted on the play.
Latter in the second period both teams had men in the penalty box as the period ended with the Ravens on a 4 on 3 power play advantage.
Halfway through the second intermission the StFX Keating Centre was left briefly in darkness as the power outage struck. Emergency lighting was not enough to brighten the way for a third period so game management staff called Game 1 as a 5-2 victory for the X-Men.
Joey Perricone earned the win in nets for the X-Men, who were outshot by the Ravens by a 21-15 margin. Alex Archibald took the loss for Carleton. Forward Ryan Berard was named the Keith’s Player of the Game for the Ravens for his effort, while X-Men forward Phil Mangan earned the Player of the Game nod for X with his four-point effort.
Game Two will be played as scheduled on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 3:00 pm in three twenty-minute periods. Should Carleton win Game Two and tie the Keating Cup Challenge, a ten minute mini overtime game will be played immediately following Game Two.
