Coaching Staff

Steve Konchalski
Head Coach


Over the past few decades StFX Coach Steve Konchalski has led the X-Men basketball program to the top of Canadian university basketball, capturing eight Atlantic conference titles along with back-to-back National championships in 2000 and 2001.  The CIS Coach of the Year in 2001, Steve previously led the X-Men to the school’s first National title in 1993.

Over his 34 year career, Canada’s Coach K has accumulated 727 wins and led the team to 33 consecutive appearances in the Atlantic Conference Playoffs. As a player, this native of Elmhurst, NY (Archbishop Molloy HS) also led Acadia University to a National title in 1965 as he was chosen tournament MVP. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia and an LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School.

Internationally, Steve served for 16 years as Assistant Coach of Canada’s National Team (including three Olympic Games) and was Head Coach of Team Canada for four years. He has been inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame, the StFX Sports Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia sports Hall of Fame. In 1999 he was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Frank Baldwin Memorial Award for dedication to basketball in Nova Scotia.

Steve coached the Nova Scotia Junior Men’s team for three summers, including the 2001 Canada Games squad. He has authored a book entitled Silver to Gold in which he chronicles the back-to-back National Championships that spanned his 25th year at StFX.

This past year Steve was named to Canada Basketball’s Counsel of Excellence, serving as an advisor to the National Team program, along with Toronto Raptor Coach Jay Torino and Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

He and his wife, Charlene, have three children, Chris (27), a masters student at UNBC; Julianne (25), a BEd grad of Ottawa U; and Maria (21), in her 4th year at StFX.


Doc Ryan
Assistant Coach

Veteran coach Doc Ryan is in his 4th year with friend and colleague Steve Konchalski after having worked together on the Canadian National Team coaching staff for a dozen years. Doc brings 25 years of CIS head coaching experience to the X-Men, having coahced the Dalhousie Tigers (men) for 8 years and the StFX X-Women for 17 years.

An outstanding player, he was an All-Canadian at UQTR (where he led the nation in scoring) and an AUAA all-star at StFX, as well as being a member of the Canadian Olympic team in 1980. Doc holds two degrees from StFX (BA and BEd) and an MA (Kinesiology) from Dalhousie. He is currently a full-time teacher at East Pictou Middle School.

Denton Anthony
Academic Advisor

A native of North Bay, ON, Denton enters his 9th year teaching in the Business Administration faculty at StFX and his 6th year as part of the X-Men staff. He previously coached youth teams to city and regional titles in Northern Ontario, as well as serving as a regional coach with the Ontario Basketball Association and a former X-Men assistant coach. He and his wife Tahnee have three young childrem Sam (9), Sydney (7) and Benjamin (5).
